About the talk
Observing the workings of the human mind, early Buddhist teachers were very much like psychologists, determined ...to understand how people create their own suffering through desires and attachment to worldly things. They saw how the mind develops feelings of isolation by seeing the world in dualistic ways, rather than with a sense of unity and wholeness.

Spiritual teachers remind us that enlightenment is the goal of our journey, a state of irreversibility, once we achieve it. But how do we define enlightenment for those who have not begun seeking it? In essence, enlightenment is the awakening of the mind’s true nature by the process of purifying thoughts, removing obscurations, and dispelling dissonant emotions.

The aspirant, like the farmer, must clear his fields, ploughing them and readying the soil to accept the seeds being planted. Only then can he expect to harvest what has been sown. Meditation is the key to this process, to quieten the mind so we can truly see how it functions.

Chamtrul Rinpoche will gently teach us how to generate the mind to enlightenment.

About the Speaker
Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche was born on September 17, 1990, on the special ...day of the Dharma Protector Six-Armed Mahākāla, an auspicious connection that has continued through his life. Rinpoche’s late father was Gyaltsen Ratak, the nephew and lifelong attendant of the previous H.E. Kalu Rinpoche, from the Ratak family of Tibet. He was recognized at a young age as the reincarnation of Kalu Rinpoche, most notably by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and H.E. Kenting Tai Situ Rinpoche. Rinpoche later developed a special relationship with Situ Rinpoche, taking him as his spiritual mentor, continuing a connection over lifetimes. The previous Kalu Rinpoche had been the retreat master at Palpung Monastery, Tai Situ’s seat in Tibet, in the retreat begun by Jamgön Kongtrul the Great, and was acknowledged as Kongtrul’s incarnation and the head of the Shangpa lineage.

Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche himself received all the empowerments and entered this traditional three-year retreat in 2004 at Sonada Monastery. After graduating in 2008 he travelled and gained experience of the modern world, before returning to Sonada to give the full Shangpa transmission and put a new group into the retreat. Since then Rinpoche has been continuously working to spread the Dharma and the Shangpa Kagyu tradition in particular. He requested and received the Shangpa transmissions for a third time from Situ Rinpoche in 2009, and has travelled to Tibetan Buddhist and Shangpa centers around the world to sustain and promote those teachings. He entered a group of yoginīs into the retreat in La Boulaye, France in 2017, and is currently overseeing the renovation of that center. He continues the tradition of holding the Shangpa Mönlam (prayer festival), most recently in 2019 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Also in 2019, Rinpoche attended the Religion and Culture Meeting in Dharamsala as the representative of the Shangpa lineage. Even during lockdown, Rinpoche continued teaching remotely and through meditation walks in the forest near where he lives with his family in Berlin.

Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche plans to continue these and other activities through the recently established Kalu Foundation, which has three main goals: (1) to translate into multiple languages the twelve volumes of the Shangpa Texts collected by his predecessor and make them freely available, (2) to engage in humanitarian aid, and (3) to sponsor qualified people for the three-year retreat.Show More

As we delve into the concept of chaos, we recognize that the external world is ever-changing and unpredictable. By cultivating loving-kindness towards ourselves and others, we can learn to navigate the chaos with greater ease and grace.

During this tour, through dhamma talks and retreats in various countries, we will explore the impermanence of life and the nature of suffering, gaining insights that empower us to respond to chaos with compassion and clarity. The practice of Metta becomes a guiding force, transforming the way we relate to ourselves and others. This practice invites us to embrace the chaos of life as a catalyst for spiritual growth, discovering the boundless power of Metta to bring harmony and well-being to our hearts and the world around us.

About the speaker
Ajahn Sujato left a career as a musician to become a Buddhist monk in 1994. He took higher ordination in Thailand and lived there in forest monasteries and remote hermitages. He spent several years at Bodhinyana Monastery in Western Australia before founding Santi Forest Monastery in New South Wales in 2003. Following Bhante Sujato’s wishes, Santi became a nun’s monastery in 2012, and he returned to live in Bodhinyana.

Ajahn Sujato has written several books including “A Swift Pair of Messengers” and “A History of Mindfulness”. In 2005, Bhante Sujato co-founded the Buddhist website SuttaCentral along with Rod Bucknell and John Kelly, to provide access to early Buddhist texts in their original language and make translations available in modern languages. After being unable to secure copyright-free digital translations of the Pali Canon for SuttaCentral, Bhante Sujato moved to the island of Chimei, off the coast of Taiwan, to undertake the task of creating English translations of the four, living there from 2015 to 2018. These translations have since been published on SuttaCentral, and as free edition books.

In 2019, Bhante Sujato moved to Sydney to establish Lokanta Vihara (the Monastery at the End of the World) with his long term student, Bhante Akaliko, to explore what it means to follow the Buddha’s teachings in an era of climate change, globalised consumerism, and political turmoil.Show More

About the Speaker:
Lobsang Nyandak is a distinguished Tibetan leader with a remarkable career spanning governance, diplomacy, and civil society. He served as the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to North America (2008–2013) and as Executive Director and later President of the Tibet Fund until 2023. A former Member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile (1996–2001), he also held the position of Kalon (Minister) for Finance, Health, and Information & International Relations (DIIR) under Kalon Tripa Professor Samdhong Rinpoche’s administration. For over a decade, he contributed to the Sino-Tibetan Dialogue Task Force, including a significant secret visit to Beijing for talks with Chinese officials. In civil society, Nyandak’s leadership includes roles as General Secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress, the largest Tibetan NGO worldwide, and Vice President and Secretary of the National Democratic Party of Tibet. As the founding Executive Director of the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, he has been a global advocate for the Tibetan cause, engaging with international leaders and conferences. A candidate for Sikyong (President) in the 2021 elections, Nyandak remains a pivotal voice in shaping the future of the Tibetan movement.Show More
