SACRE (Education)

SACRE and RE Support Group

The Buddhist Society has been instrumental in helping the National Association of Standing Advisory Councils on Religious Education raise awareness in the Buddhist community on the teaching of RE and Collective Worship in schools, and in filling in vacant positions for Buddhist representatives on local SACREs in the South East and beyond.

A number of Buddhist Society members are now involved in SACRE work, strengthening the foundations of the Buddhist Society’s future involvement in Education and the provision of quality material for Schools. This includes our SACRE reading list, which provides a framework of Buddhist books for each of the 5 Key Stages as well as the Early Years Foundation stage:

The Buddhist Society has helped organizing events at various primary and secondary schools, providing speakers from different traditions and backgrounds for school Assemblies and RE classes. The Buddhist Society also has held events in the building, allowing students to have first hand experience of being at a Buddhist centre.

For the coming year the SACRE & RE support group, in collaboration with other Buddhist Organizations and individuals, is planning to :

  1. Participate in the review of syllabuses in a number of Local Authorities, adapting them to maximize their impact and usefulness in the changing educational and technological landscapes.
  2. Identifying suitable free or low-cost online Buddhist resources for schools, which are becoming increasingly dependent on them due to mounting financial constraints

Should any member of The Buddhist Society want to join the SACRE & RE support group they are invited to contact the Secretary: info ‘at’ the buddhistsociety.org
